May 14th, 2022
By: Jonny Richardson
The San Diego Growlers (1-1) host the Los Angeles Aviators (0-1) on Saturday afternoon in the yet another SoCal rivalry game between the two West Division foes. The forecast is for 80 degrees and sunny with a fair chance of windy conditions as well. The team that can consistently hold on offense and convert key defensive break opportunities will surely come out on top in this matchup.
After dropping their season and home opener to the Salt Lake Shred, the Growlers played spoiler in the Oakland Spiders’ home opener with a 18-16 road victory. Sean McDougall led the team with three goals and three assists and Hunter Corbett scored five goals, the most for any Growler so far this season. Travis Dunn, Goose Helton, Paul Lally, and Tim Okita will all be major keys to the team’s offensive success.
McDougall joined the Growlers this season after spending 6 years in LA, and in two games has eight assists, seven goals, three blocks and ranks sixth in the league with a +15 plus/minus. McDougall, Corbett, Zach Schakner, Tyler Bacon, Chris Mazur, Collin Gall, and Jesse Cohen all played with LA for at least 1 season in the past.
San Diego will be up against former teammates Bailey Wu (2019), Marcel Osbourne (2018-19) and Sam Fontaine (2017-19) as they make their return to America’s Finest City as Aviators.
LA also dropped their season and home opener to the Salt Lake Shred. In that game, Sam Cook (+6) recorded three goals and two assists while Rhys Gretch (+4) scored one goal and threw three assists. The Aviators top scorer, KJ Koo (+8), will not be available, and LA will also be missing Matt Miller as well.
The two 2015 AUDL expansion clubs will square off at 1 p.m. PT from Mission Bay High School on Saturday, May 14.
Tickets are still available here, and the game will be streamed on watch.AUDL.tv.
